Stephanie Gilbert describes her great-great-grandfather, Oliver Cromwell ‘O.C.’ Gilbert, as an orator, musician, music teacher, politician, entrepreneur, abolitionist, freedom-seeker, and enslaved human being. Stephanie, Chief Commercial Officer at Sequential Tech, a Black-owned technology firm, approached Aliya Hammond Consulting this year to develop a website that would honor the lasting legacy of her ancestor and the 175th anniversary of his escape from slavery at the age of 16.
Our Goal
Stephanie attempted to build the website on her own at first. However, when she ran into issues with both the platform and hosting, she realized professional help was required. The AHC team stepped in to assist Stephanie, not only correcting the issues faced by our client, but also reaching our goal of creating something special to honor her family legacy.
A Historic Web Design
The O.C. Gilbert web design is dignified and inviting, with a sepia tone that gives it an old-time look and feel. This neutral color scheme also includes shades of creamy beige and gray, as well as a few hints of gold. We chose a classic display font that features flourished serifs to perfectly fit the historic theme and complement the other elements on the page.
Notable Features
In addition to a dedicated page on the book project Stephanie is working on as custodian of O.C. Gilbert’s autobiography, the site includes a journal area where Stephanie can continue to document her experiences and new discoveries about her ancestor. Other notable features include tabs that allow visitors to sign up to receive journal updates and a newsletter, as well as a subscribable events calendar and searchable archives. We also developed a custom dashboard and conducted training for our client on how to update her new site. Now that it has launched, we are providing continued support, when needed.
We invite you to visit ocgilbert.com to see the results of our efforts and to learn more about upcoming events and appearances, including the 175th Anniversary of Oliver Gilbert’s Dash for Liberty, a Freedom Walk that will retrace his steps beginning on August 20 at 8AM and concluding on August 24 at 5PM.
