As the world has changed, so has the way we communicate. Recently, Facebook has updated their platforms to help users stay connected, including Facebook Messenger Rooms, Live With Friends, and AI 360-degree backgrounds and mood lighting. Over the next three weeks, this series will explore how each of these updates will support Facebook’s online community, both personally and professionally.

Addressing The Demand For Real-Time Video

As people seek new ways to communicate, video calling services have boomed. To address “the demand for real-time video,” Facebook has added a new feature to Messenger, its private social media messaging platform. Instead of merely texting friends, family and co-workers, these new Messenger Rooms will enable individuals to host group video calls and chat free of a time limit.

Messenger Rooms enable a user to host a virtual gathering of up to 50 guests, either private or public. Those accessing the room don’t even need a Facebook account to participate — they just need a link to the room to join in from a computer or mobile device. Facebook noted that this new platform was created to support the online community during this difficult time, and encourages users to “host celebrations, gather a book club or just hang out on the couch with friends.”

Addressing Privacy Concerns

While Facebook has dealt with its share of privacy concerns in recent years, it has upped the control people have in Messenger Rooms, including the ability to remove a participant, lock a room, or report issues that violate the platform’s Community Standards. Additionally, guests can leave a room anytime they want, or anonymously block others who might be bothering them.

While Messenger Rooms are user-friendly, they are also designed to be difficult to hack. For added security, a new link will be generated every time you create a room. Video calls will not be monitored by the platform and ads will be restricted. Facebook will also limit the information they collect from participants.
