Stop Doing These 3 Things On Instagram

It’s 2023 (almost 2024), and Instagram is currently the most-downloaded app in the world. Since its release 13 years ago, this social media platform has grown to an incredible 1.386 billion daily users across the globe. With a ton of features, from photos and short-form videos to live streaming, it also has massive advertising potential. But like Spiderman famously said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Aliya Hammond Consulting employs a talented team of knowledgeable, experienced Social Media Managers, and we are always happy to help. But if you prefer to handle your marketing in-house, we beg you to stop doing these three things on Instagram!

#1. Adding Links to the Post Copy

While some popular platforms, like Facebook, let you click on a link from a post, you can’t do that on Instagram. Simply copying and pasting a link isn’t going to work either, and by now, you should know better than to do that. Links make it easy to find and share info, but when it comes to Instagram, you must always add them to the “bio” area!

According to Indeed, “The popular phrase ‘link in bio’ refers to a clickable link that you can post in the bio area of your Instagram profile. This tool is available to all types of accounts on Instagram, including personal, business and creative pages. This link takes you to external websites that you can access through the Instagram app.”

Linktree (and similar online tools) allow you to conjure up a customized link in bio to share “everything you create, curate and sell from your Instagram,” as well as on other social media platforms, like TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. Best of all, it can be accomplished in mere minutes. So if you ignore this advice, frankly, you’re just being lazy. You’ll probably annoy your target audience, too.

Harsh, we know. But it’s true.

#2. Creating Text-Based Graphics and Reels that Nobody Can Read

Did you know that about two-thirds of American adults wear some kind of glasses or contacts,” according to The Philadelphia Tribune? Think about your followers (i.e. potential customers/clients) when creating content, especially those who are older or visually impaired. If the font size you use is so small you have to squint to read it, it’s going to be hard to read for everyone.

#3. Cramming in Too Much Information, Too Quickly

Also, keep in mind that most people read in a pattern (typically three words at a time), and not always quickly. Too much information crammed on slides, lots of busy design elements, and fast-moving text on reels can make it difficult to digest your content. Again, not heeding this advice will likely only lead to frustration and headaches for your target audience, which is bad for business.

It’s also important to be aware when repurposing Instagram content, which can lead to issues on other networks!
