Over the past few months, we’ve covered several marketing strategies within our blog, from content and conversion marketing, to engagement and attraction marketing. Each involves a unique use of social media for business — but did you know email can also be a valuable component of a sound social media strategy as well? It’s true! Today, we’ll go beyond social media platforms to discuss the top elements of an effective email marketing campaign that every business should follow.

#1. Keep subject lines short.

This element tops the list for a reason! Your subject line is the first thing a target customer sees when scrolling through a cluttered inbox, so the goal is to grab attention and spark interest while being as concise as possible. You want your email to be opened, after all. The best subject lines are creative while getting right to the point, and they should always fit the content of the email. Remember, nothing turns off customers like “clickbait.”

#2. Personalize emails by using the person’s first name.

This best practice helps to further the relationship with your target customer and shows you care about them as an individual. Delighting the customer with a personalized email helps to build brand loyalty and drive repeat business as well. Email advertising offers an opportunity to add a human touch to your business, so be sure to talk to the folks on your list as if you’re talking to a friend instead of a potential means for profit.

#3. Keep it simple.

An effective email marketing campaign should be relevant to your business and provide value. When crafting your message, keep it simple, and again, as concise as possible. No one has time to read a thousand word email, so aim for no more than 300 words with a clear message that maximizes engagement.

Options can include:

  • Helpful resources
  • Exclusive content
  • Giveaways
  • Videos

It’s also smart to limit your emails to two per week. Any more than that and you could annoy your target customer to the point of unsubscribing.

#4. Optimize for mobile.

No longer tied to a desktop computer, today’s target customer stays connected in multiple ways, including mobile devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones. That means your email could be opened on any number of gadgets. Optimizing your email design ensures a user-friendly experience for every device, as well as all social media platforms.

#5. Integrate Email and Social Media.

Streamline your communication by combining your use of social media and email in a cohesive way. This can include calls to action in emails that drive traffic to your website and social media platforms, or giving away free content—or a free product or service—across multiple outlets. We also recommend split testing your audience. This social media strategy can help you determine what’s working and what’s not, across the board.
